The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is home to active SPIE and Optica student chapters. Through technical talks, workshops, and outreach programs, these chapters play a key role in promoting interest and knowledge in optics and photonics within the academic community and beyond.

Invited Lectures
INVITED TALK by Prof. Nathan Hagen (Utsunomiya University, Japan) on 18/03/2025
Prof. Nathan Hagen from the Center for Optical Research and Education (CORE), Utsunomiya University, Japan, delivered an invited talk at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) on March 18, 2025 (Tuesday). The title of the talk was “Spectral Imaging and Geometric Phase”.
INVITED TALK by Dr. Yukitoshi Otani (Utsunomiya University, Japan) on 11/03/2024
Student Chapters organized an invited talk on March 11, 2024, by Dr. Yukitoshi Otani, Professor in the Department of Optical Engineering and Director of CORE, Utsunomiya University, Japan. Dr. Otani delivered an insightful lecture titled “Bio-Polarization Imaging Using RGB Snapshot Full Stokes Camera.” He introduced a cutting-edge imaging system capable of capturing comprehensive polarization data using two RGB micropixel polarization cameras integrated with micro-polarizer arrays.
Lab Visits
Lab visit on May 22 2024 by school students as a part of CRYSTAL (Crafting Young Scientists of Tomorrow) program by KSCSTE
On May 22, 2024, the Student Chapters hosted a lab visit for school students as part of the Crafting Young Scientists of Tomorrow (CRYSTAL) program, an initiative by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE). The CRYSTAL program aims to promote science and technology development in the state by engaging and inspiring state-level winners from grades 7 to 12.
Outreach Programs
Outreach program on November 8, 2024, at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Vattiyoorkavu
We set up a stall at the school, where students from first standard to higher secondary classes, along with their parents and teachers, visited. During the program, we demonstrated simple experiments to explain basic concepts of optics, such as reflection, refraction, and diffraction. These demonstrations helped introduce the principles of optics in an easy-to-understand and interactive way. The program successfully introduced the basics of optics to a wide audience and inspired interest in the subject.
